Welcome to How I Learn


How I Learn is a Wellington-based educational psychology assessment service.  It is run by clinical psychologists, Emma Levy and Polly Schaverien, along with a team of clinical and educational psychologists. We work with children, adolescents and adults to explore learning potential, and the areas of academic ability and difficulty that impact learning. 

People use our assessment services to:

  • Understand why they are facing learning challenges at school, in study or on the job.
  • Identify and diagnose specific learning disorders such as dyslexia, and broader challenges, such as intellectual disability.   
  • Identify gifted and talented learners.
  • Support Special Assessment Condition (SAC) applications to NZQA.

How I Learn - bookings update - 3 December 2020.

Bookings for Term 1 2021 opened on Wednesday 2nd December 2020 at 8:00am.  Spaces filled very quickly, and we are now (nearly) full. The contact form has therefore been removed from the Contact Us page.  

We do have a couple of spaces left for assessments in term 1 2021 with our intern psychologists. These assessments are carried out at a reduced rate by one of our interns, but under the guidance of one of our supervisors. Referrals will reopen on Tuesday 2 March 2021 at 8:00am for assessments in term 2 of 2021.

We apologise that we are not able to accept further referrals until next year.  We have grown our team to seven for next year, but are still struggling to meet demand.  How I Learn will continue to accommodate as many assessments as we can, while maintaining our commitment to tailored, indepth, quality assessment processes.
